Sale Sharks went on to claim their second win in the ongoing Gallagher Premiership season after they defeated Newcastle Falcons 20-7 at AJ Bell Stadium on Saturday.

The win has lifted Sale Sharks to 10th place with nine points in the table while Newcastle Falcons' poor run continues as they languish at the bottom of the table after losing five out of the six games until now.

Newcastle Falcons suffered an early setback in the game when Vereniki Goneva left the field injured in the seventh minute. As both the teams were scrappy for most part of the first half, the first points in the game came in the 34th minute when Aj MacGinty kicked a penalty goal.

The Falcons responded in the 37th minute when skipper Will Welch touched down followed by a conversion from Joel Hodgson as the teams headed into the break with a 3-7 scoreline.

The visitors' indiscipline costed them as Logovi'i Mulipola was sin-binned in the 52nd minute for an early tackle on Marland Yarde and James Phillips made most of the numerical advantage with a 54th minute try. The second sin-bin for Newcastle Falcons came in the 61st minute when Michael Young was yellow-carded for a high tackle on Byron McGuigan.

Further tries from Bryn Evans (66') and Rohan Janse van Rensburg (73') ensured Steve Diamond's completed a 20-7 victory.

"Newcastle are a top-four side, let's be honest. Ourselves and them haven't hit as much form as we would have hoped," said Diamond.

"When you're in the competition that we're in at the minute, and it is most definitely the strongest league I've coached in, you have to get your home wins and I was delighted we got that.

"I thought we made hard work of it but we managed in the last 20 minutes to control it."
