Ronan O'Gara extends La Rochelle deal to 2031

Ronan O'Gara has committed his long-term future to La Rochelle after signing a contract extension through June 2031, effectively ruling him out of the race to replace Leo Cullen as Leinster head coach next season.

La Rochelle confirmed that O'Gara, whose previous contract was due to expire in June 2027, has agreed a four-year extension that will keep him in charge of the Top 14 club through June 2031.

The former Munster and Ireland fly-half joined La Rochelle in 2019 and has headed the professional team since 2021. During his tenure, the French club won consecutive European Champions Cup titles in 2022 and 2023.

O'Gara said he and his family were delighted to continue their association with La Rochelle, highlighting the trust shown by the club and the backing of supporters during both successful and more difficult periods.

"My family and I are very happy and proud to continue this adventure with Stade Rochelais," O'Gara told the club website.

"We have lived through exceptional times and gone through more difficult times together. In each of them, I felt the confidence of the Club and the support of our supporters.

"I believe deeply in this Club, in its players, in its staff and in its ambition."

Leinster succession links end after new deal

O'Gara had become one of the leading contenders to succeed Cullen, who is set to leave Leinster when his contract expires at the end of the 2026/27 season.

The recruitment process for Cullen's successor is being conducted by Leinster in collaboration with the Irish Rugby Football Union. O'Gara's previous La Rochelle contract was due to end at the same time as Cullen's departure, making him a prominent candidate for the position.

His new agreement now keeps him contracted to La Rochelle until 2031, effectively ruling him out of the Leinster succession race.
