France have suffered a major blow ahead of the upcoming Rugby World Cup with fly-half Romain Ntamack set to miss the tournament according to a report.

Ntamack has been an integral part in the France squad and even scored the opening try during their thrilling 30-27 win over Scotland in which he was seen limping off the field at the end of the third quarter after a collision with opposite number Finn Russell.

The 24-year-old underwent a scan on his knee on Monday as reported earlier to assess the extent of the damage and according to French newspaper L’Equipe, Ntamack suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury which is likely to keep him out of the showpiece event.

“According to our information, from concordant sources, this Monday’s examinations finally revealed the worst, namely a rupture of the cruciate ligament of the left knee,” L’Equipe revealed.

“If nothing is official yet, this injury automatically leads to a withdrawal from the France team and Stade Toulousain for the World Cup.”

The news has yet to be confirmed by the Les Blues, who kick off their campaign against New Zealand in Saint-Denis on 8th September.
