The Welsh Rugby Union has confirmed the appointment of Robert Butcher as the new chairman.

Butcher, who will became fifth chairman of WRU in professional era will replace Gareth Davies following his six-week tenure.

“It’s an absolute honour to take on the chairmanship of the Welsh Rugby Union at this hugely significant moment in the history of our great game, I am genuinely proud and humbled to be appointed and can promise I will give my all to serve our game," said Butcher.

“I look forward to working with Ieuan Evans, the rest of the board and the executive as we continue to navigate the impact the ongoing pandemic has had on our game. We will survive this, but our actions now will determine how quickly we get back up to speed.”

Earlier, Wales defence coach Byron Hayward left his position with immediate effect following the side's poor performance in the Six Nations tournament where they finished fifth.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with Wales and it was an honour to coach my country.

“As I have always said from day one, the team comes first and upon reflection of the last campaign with Wayne we felt it was best for me to step aside.

“When I took the role last year I wouldn’t have planned to be leaving as the squad prepare to start the new international season, I believe it is the right decision for myself and the squad as they enter a new campaign.

“I would like to wish Wayne and the squad all the best going forward and I will be fully supporting them.”

Hayward's departure follows after Sam Warburton stepped down as technical coach and Ryan Jones resigned from his performance director role in the last one month.
