Ulster hooker Rob Herring is set to miss the upcoming Six Nations tournament for Ireland following an arm injury.

The 39-year-old sustained the injury during a training session and missed the club's Champions Cup fixture against Toulouse which they went on to lose 24-48.

Ulster head coach Dan McFarland revealed that Herring, who has played 39 times for Ireland may need a surgery to address the issue.

"I suspect his prospects for the Six Nations are not great for the moment," McFarland told RTÉ Sport.

"He hasn’t seen the surgeon yet but I suspect he will need a procedure on that. It was innocuous tackle in training."

Ireland head coach Andy Farrell is expected to name an extended squad for the upcoming Six Nations tournament on 17th February.

Ireland will kick-start their campaign with a clash against France at Orange Velodrome on 2nd February.
