Rassie Erasmus has agreed a contract extension with South Africa national rugby union team, committing to remain in charge through to the end of the 2031 Rugby World Cup cycle.
Erasmus, who previously served as director of rugby and led the Springboks to World Cup titles in 2019 and 2023, was appointed head coach last year.
The new four-year deal ensures he will guide the team through the 2027 and 2031 tournaments. Erasmus said the decision was straightforward:
“I have always said that I would find it hard to coach any other international team, and I'm very happy to continue as long as the South African public wants me.”
The extension was lauded by SA Rugby’s leadership as recognition of Erasmus’s achievements and influence on South African rugby.
"This decision reflects not only Rassie's remarkable track record of success, but also the enduring impact he has made in shaping the identity of our game," SA Rugby president Mark Alexander said.
The announcement comes shortly after South Africa were drawn into Pool B for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, grouped with Italy, Georgia and Romania.
