All Blacks centre Quinn Tupaea has committed his future to New Zealand Rugby and the Chiefs, signing a new contract that will keep him in the country until the end of the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
The 26-year-old midfielder turned down offers from overseas clubs, stating that his priority is to continue pursuing success with the All Blacks and winning championships with the Chiefs. He described the decision as part of his “unfinished business” in New Zealand rugby.
“Rugby’s a business at the end of the day, and there’s always going to be offers from overseas, and when you see them it’s enticing,” he said.
“But ultimately I had a bit of unfinished business here with wanting to get into the black jersey again, and win a championship for my club, that was the big reason for staying.
“I’ve had good conversations with my family and partner [about] where I wanted to be, at my age and stage of my career. I feel like I’ve still got a lot to add here in New Zealand, so I’m pretty happy to stay.”
Tupaea’s international career was disrupted in 2022 by a serious knee injury, but his strong form in this year’s Super Rugby Pacific campaign earned him a recall.
In his 18th Test, he made a decisive impact by scoring a match-winning try against the Springboks at Eden Park, reminding selectors of his ability to change games.
The All Blacks midfield remains competitive, with Jordie Barrett and Billy Proctor the current preferred pairing, while experienced options like Anton Lienert-Brown and younger talents such as Timoci Tavatavanawai are also in contention. Tupaea, however, is seen as a vital piece in coach Scott Robertson’s long-term plans.
Chiefs head coach Jono Gibbes praised Tupaea’s loyalty and resilience, highlighting his leadership qualities and influence on the squad. He noted that Tupaea’s decision strengthens both the Chiefs and the All Blacks heading into future international campaigns.
“Quinn is a unique player and his resilience, passion and leadership over the past few years has shown the kind of character he is,” Gibbes said, in the statement announcing Tupaea’s re-signing.
“To see what he’s overcome, and return to perform at such a high level, speaks to his commitment to the jersey, his team and the community.
“We’re thrilled to have him re-sign and continue to be a big part of the future.”
