All Blacks head coach Scott Robertson has added legendary coach Wayne Smith to his setup as New Zealand prepare for their Rugby Championship clash against the Springboks at Eden Park this Saturday.
Smith, who has coached the All Blacks and Black Ferns to multiple World Cup titles, returns with a wealth of experience spanning nearly two decades at the top level.
Robertson explained that Smith’s involvement had long been planned, saying, “Sir Wayne has been locked away in the calendar—this is the one he and all of us have noted. He brings little bits of gold… and we all respect him.”
Known as one of New Zealand rugby’s most tactically astute minds, Smith is expected to provide insight and calmness as the All Blacks look to sharpen their preparations.
The All Blacks are under pressure following their recent loss to Argentina in Buenos Aires. The Eden Park clash has been billed as the biggest Test since the 2011 World Cup Final, with the All Blacks defending an unbeaten streak of 50 matches at the ground.
All four Rugby Championship teams currently hold one win each, with New Zealand sitting on top of the table due to bonus points.
Robertson stressed that the addition of Smith would help the squad maintain composure and raise their standards in what could be a decisive battle for momentum in the tournament.
“He’s got so much wisdom. Thirty years at the top level, he brings that perspective—things you don’t always think about under pressure. That’s what makes him invaluable,” he added.
