Megan Jones will lead England into 2026 after being appointed captain of the Red Roses.

A cornerstone of the national setup, the 29-year-old takes over the role from 2025 Women’s Rugby World Cup-winning skipper Zoe Stratford, who is expecting her first child.

“Firstly, I’m really excited for Zoe and wish her and Strats every happiness on their news,” Jones said.

“It’s a huge honour to have been named captain of the Red Roses. Mitch and I have built a strong relationship over the past three years and it’s a great feeling to have his trust to lead the group along with a tight leadership team.

“I’m buzzing to get back in camp with the girls for the Six Nations. I’ll just be the same old Meg and know I’ll have great support from Zoe, the leaders and the whole squad.”

Having served as vice-captain, Jones steps into the top job off the back of an outstanding 2025 campaign. She played a key role in England’s Six Nations Grand Slam triumph and their Rugby World Cup success, while also earning a nomination for World Player of the Year.

Jones first pulled on an England shirt at just 18 in 2015 and has since built an impressive career that includes two Olympic appearances for Great Britain.

She featured in 12 of England’s 13 matches across 2025, underlining her importance at centre, and has also made her mark domestically with seven outings for Trailfinders Women as they chased a top-four finish in Premiership Women’s Rugby.

Supporting her in the leadership group will be vice-captains Amy Cokayne and Alex Matthews, both seasoned internationals with more than 80 caps each.

Head coach John Mitchell said: “Meg reflects our values; her personality, capabilities and leadership are hugely valuable to the Red Roses squad. She brings an infectious energy that lifts those around her and has had a huge influence on our culture and connections over the past three years. Not only is Meg highly respected, but she also consistently produces high-level performances and leads by example every time she takes to the field.”
