Matthew Dalton joins Kobe Steelers

Former Ulster lock Matthew Dalton has joined Japanese League One side Kobelco Kobe Steelers after ending his stint with the Irish province.

The 27-year-old Belfast-born forward was among a number of players to depart the province after the 2025/26 campaign.

The move gives Dalton a new opportunity in Japan Rugby League One with one of the country’s established clubs.

Former Ulster Lock Moves To Japan

Dalton made nine appearances for Ulster last season, including three starts. He also produced a standout performance against Cardiff, where he was named player of the match.

A versatile back-five forward, Dalton can operate in the second row and also provide cover in the back row. That flexibility is expected to be valuable as he adapts to Japanese rugby.

Kobe Steelers Add Back-Five Depth

Dalton has built a varied career across several competitions. Between his spells with Ulster, he also played for Newcastle and French club Soyaux-Angoulême.

Speaking after the move, Dalton said he was honoured to join Kobe Steelers and become part of the club and its wider Kobelco family. He said he was excited to embrace a new challenge, experience Japanese culture and play in front of the club’s supporters.
