Adre Smith, a standout lock for the Stormers, has joined Japanese club Toyota Verblitz on loan for the remainder of the current season.
This temporary move offers Smith an opportunity to play in Japan Rugby League One while bringing his physicality and experience to the Verblitz squad.
The 27-year-old has been a crucial figure for the Stormers, particularly stepping up during Salmaan Moerat’s injury earlier in the season. Known for his reliability in the lineout and work rate across the field, Smith has been a key asset to the team’s success.
Expressing his enthusiasm about the move, Smith shared: "It has always been a dream of mine to play the sport I love in Japan and what a privilege it is to share my dream with the great club, Verblitz."
The move to Verblitz also provides Smith a chance to work with renowned rugby coaches, further enhancing his development.
Toyota Verblitz have been proactive in bolstering their roster this season. The addition of Smith to their ranks aims to bring additional power to their forward pack as the team seeks to remain competitive in Japan Rugby League One.
While Smith’s departure leaves a temporary gap in the Stormers' squad, the team’s management has expressed support for the move. Gaining international experience in Japan is expected to broaden Smith’s skills, ultimately benefiting the Stormers when he returns.
