Former Argentina Under 20 international Mateo Carreras becomes the latest player to sign a contract extension with Newcastle Falcons.

Carreras started his career with Argentine club Los Tarcos in 2018 before shifting to Super Rugby side Jaguares in 2019. He also featured for Argentina 7s in the Sevens World Cup in Colorado.

His association with the Falcons started in 2021 and has gone on to make four appearances for the club. He was suspended for nine weeks in March after admitting to make intentional contact with the eye of Wasps winger Josh Bassett.

“I am very happy to extend my contract with Newcastle," he told the club's official website.

“I think we can do a lot of good things next season.

“We have an outstanding staff of coaches and players, and I am really motivated for the year ahead.”

Newcastle Falcons director of rugby Dean Richards reckons Carreras has the right credentials to succeed at the top level.

“Mateo is a young player with a huge amount of potential.

“He has outstanding footwork and pace, and for a relatively small guy he hits incredibly hard.

“It’s obviously well documented that he has been serving a suspension over the past couple of months, for which he has apologised and will learn from, and we’re looking forward to seeing him back on the field showcasing his rugby ability.”

Newcastle Falcons are at 11th place in the Gallagher Premiership table with eight wins from 20 games and will face Worcester Warriors next on 5th June.
