England 6-11 Scotland, Twickenham Stadium
Scorecard

Scotland registered their first win over England at Twickenham Stadium since 1983 with a 11-6 margin to regain the Calcutta Cup in the opening round of the Six Nations.

The game also marked the 150th anniversary since both the teams faced other for the first time and it was Dark Blues, who made the occasion memorable.

England conceded a number of penalties but Scotland struggled to convert the possession into points and in the end the try from Duhan van der Merwe was the difference between the two sides with Owen Farrell and Finn Russell kicking two penalties apiece for the respective sides.

Finn Russell got Scotland off the mark early in the game with a fifth minute penalty goal. The pressure looked evident on the hosts as they conceded seven penalties in the opening quarter but Scotland failed to take a big lead in that phase.

With England conceding their ninth penalty in the 23rd minute, referee Andrew Brace sent Billy Vunipola to sin-bin for a high tackle. Scotland made use of the numerical advantage when a cross-kick from Stuart Hogg allowed van der Merwe over the line around the half-hour mark.

Russell missed the conversion and England finally got their first points on the board with a penalty kick from Farrell in the 33rd minute. As the half-time was approaching, Scotland were reduced to 14-men temporarily with Russell yellow carded for a deliberate tackle on Ben Young and Farrell with his second three-pointer ensured England reduced the arrears to two points at the end of the opening half.

Russell marked his presence on return from sin-bin with his second penalty kick in the 48th minute to make the scoreline 6-11 but gave England a respite as he missed a three-pointer in the 54th minute.

With eight minutes left in the game, Stuart Hogg missed a long-range penalty kick that would have put Scotland eight points ahead but it did not matter in the end as England could not add to their tally from the first half allowing Gregor Townsend's side seal a five-point victory.
