Rugby legend Ma’a Nonu has once again defied expectations, signing a one-year extension with French Top 14 club Toulon that will see him play through the 2025–26 season.
At 43 years of age, Nonu will become one of the oldest players to feature in a top-tier European league, continuing a professional career that spans more than two decades.
The former All Blacks centre, known for his devastating power and unmatched presence in midfield, initially returned to Toulon in February as a short-term injury replacement. His return, however, quickly turned into something far more historic.
In March, Nonu became the oldest player ever to play in a Top 14 match when he took the field against Castres.
“I made a surprise comeback as cover and ended up setting an age record… so the club offered me a full-season deal,” said Nonu, reflecting on his unexpected return to competitive rugby and the trust Toulon has placed in him.
Nonu’s extension comes amid an ambitious recruitment phase for Toulon. The club has also signed Zach Mercer from England, Juan Ignacio Brex from Italy, and promising young flanker Patrick Tuifua.
