England head coach John Mitchell said the Red Roses must now be considered close to one of the greatest English sporting teams of all time after sealing an eighth straight Women’s Six Nations title with a 43-28 Grand Slam-deciding win over France in Bordeaux.
Mitchell’s emotional reaction after the match became one of the defining moments of England’s latest championship success.
John Mitchell Reacts To Red Roses Grand Slam Win
Mitchell struggled to hide his emotion as he reflected on what the Red Roses have achieved.
He said people could now reasonably place the team among England’s greatest sides across any sport, but stressed that what matters most inside the group is the values they live by and the standards they hold themselves to.
"I think we must be pretty close.
"Again, it's nice for people to talk about us in that way, I just think what's more important to us morally is the values that we live.
"The girls are crackers. They're brave. They take no s---. They're just so driven. That's what makes them so good. It's very easy for me to fit into that environment".

The England coach also highlighted the team’s hunger to keep improving despite already sitting at the top of the women’s game. He said the group is now in a new cycle and remains determined to keep building on success rather than simply living off previous achievements.
"We're in a new cycle. No English team, men's or women's, has ever gone back-to-back after a World Cup. Not that we're driven by outcome, but we wanted to be very intentional around winning on winning."
