Jean-Luc du Preez says he is determined to make the most of his first Springbok start in seven years when South Africa face Australia in Cape Town this weekend.

The 30-year-old loose forward has been named at number eight for the second Rugby Championship Test. His last start came in 2018 against England, a match the Boks won 42-39.

Since then, Du Preez has been a regular in training squads but often missed out on the starting line-up. He has 14 Test caps, with his most recent appearance coming off the bench against Argentina in a Rugby World Cup warm-up in 2023.

South Africa enter Saturday’s clash under pressure after losing heavily to the Wallabies in Johannesburg last week.

Du Preez admitted that the team must improve defensively. “There is a lot of pressure on us. For me, after seven years without a start, I just need to focus on preparation and doing my job,” he said.

He expects another strong challenge from Australia, adding: “Their turnover attack cut us up last week, so this week was all about fixing our defence.”

Du Preez admitted that at times he doubted whether he would play a major role for the Springboks again. “There were moments when I thought of giving up, but I could never really do that.

"It has taken a long time, but you can never take this jersey for granted.”

With Siya Kolisi injured and Jasper Wiese suspended, Du Preez has an opportunity to cement his place. Still, he insists he is not looking too far ahead. “Saturday is the only thing on my mind right now,” he said.

He also reflected on his recent outing against the Barbarians in Cape Town, saying it boosted his confidence. “I’m just thankful for the chance to represent my country again,” he added.
