England hooker Jamie George is confident that his side can make a strong comeback in the Six Nations tournament despite a defeat to Scotland in the opening round.

The red rose team lost the Calcutta Cup for the second consecutive year despite Marcus Smith's effort where he scored all the 17 points. Just as England had a 10-17 lead by the 63rd minute but the momentum changed when Luke Cowan-Dickie was sin-binned for slapping a crossfield kick from Finn Russell forward into touch that also resulted in a penalty try for the Dark Blues.

As the scores were levelled, Russell landed the decisive penalty goal in the 72nd minute to ensure Gregor Townsend's men started the campaign with a three-point victory.

England will now be facing Italy in the second round at Stadio Olimpico and George believes England can still challenge the title.

"It’s disappointing to lose the first game but we have come back from situations like this and won a tournament,’ said hooker Jamie George.

"We are fully aware that the Six Nations is all about momentum. Our main focus has to be going to Italy and getting five points. We need to win the rest of our games. That’s going to be the main focus.

"Losing the first game is all people will be speaking about, but I thought there was a lot of good in the game as well.

"It’s certainly not the end of the world. We are not saying it was all OK and we are gutted to lose, but we have to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and get ourselves right for Italy."
