Melbourne Rebels have confirmed that number eight Isi Naisarani has penned a new two-year deal that will keep him committed to the Super Rugby club at least until the end of the 2021 season.

Naisarani started his professional rugby career with Brisbane City and moved to Perth Spirit in 2017. After enjoying Super Rugby stints with Western Force and Brumbies, the 24-year-old joined Melbourne Rebels ahead of the 2019 season. He has featured in 10 Super Rugby games for the Rebels this season.

“I’ve loved my time here in Melbourne so far,” Naisarani said.

“Having spent my first three years in Super Rugby at three different clubs, I feel that settling down here is the right choice, and the Rebels will give me the best chance of developing my rugby further.

“I feel like we’re also building a special group of players here in Melbourne and under the guidance of Dave (Wessels), I also feel like we are capable of achieving results which can push us into finals beyond this year.”

Earlier in April, Naisarani was declared eligible to represent Australia. Melbourne Rebels’ General Manager Professional Rugby & Pathways Nick Ryan believes the 6ft 5in number eight has all the credentials to become a successful player with the club.

“Isi is an exceptionally hard-working member of the playing group, and in our eyes, has proven himself as one of the best number eights in the competition,” Ryan said.

“We thoroughly believe Isi is a big part of our club going forward and we can’t wait to help support and nurture his rugby development.

“Him re-signing is a testament to our on-field department for developing a world-class high-performance program which retains high quality talent such as Isi.”

Rebels currently hold the second position in the Australian Conference with seven wins from 13 games and will face New South Wales Waratahs at AAMI Park in the 16th round.
