The Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) authorities have launched an investigation after Ireland debutant Edwin Edogbo was subjected to racist abuse online following the Six Nations match against Italy.
IRFU Investigates Racist Abuse
The 23-year-old forward made his first international appearance off the bench late in Ireland’s victory in Dublin. Shortly after the match, racist comments appeared under social media posts related to his debut.
The governing body confirmed it is working with monitoring partners and relevant authorities to identify offenders and gather evidence. Officials said comments sections on several posts were restricted after abusive messages were detected.
Monitoring And Sanctions Measures
The union uses a tracking system that identifies threatening and discriminatory content across social platforms. Verified cases can lead to sanctions including stadium bans, ticket restrictions and referral to law enforcement.
Officials reiterated a zero-tolerance stance toward racism and said affected players will receive full support during the investigation process.
“We’re aware of some targeted abuse online in recent days and continue to work with Signify and the relevant authorities to report it,” said an IRFU spokesperson.
“We will also continue to fully support all affected by the cowardly actions of a minority and investigations are underway alongside our partners Signify.
“It is clear that racist abuse has no place in Irish society and the IRFU has a zero tolerance policy towards racism of any form.”
