Irish Rugby Football Union has confirmed that fly-half Johnny Sexton will miss the Six Nations opener against Scotland after failing to recover from a calf injury.

The 31-year-old suffered the blow during the 24-24 draw in the European Champions Cup encounter at Stade Pierre Antoine where he was replaced in the 21st minute but on his return to training on Tuesday, he felt discomfort while running.

In the absence of Sexton, Ulster's Paddy Jackson will be the preferred number 10 for the clash against Scotland while Munster's Ian Keatley has been drafted into the squad. Uncapped Munster centre Rory Scannell is likely to provide back up to Jackson at fly-half.

A tweet made by Ireland's board revealed the news on Sexton.

"Johnny Sexton has done some running but will not be considered for selection for this weekend.

"Johnny did some light running but is still feeling some tightness. He will continue to rehab but won't be selected this weekend."

Earlier, Joe Schmidt had omitted Ian Madigan from the squad after he decided to ply his trade in France with Bordeaux Begles.

Apart from Sexton, Ireland will also miss the services of flanker Peter O'Mahony for the game against Scotland at Murrayfield due to a hamstring injury.
