Ireland’s 23-13 loss to New Zealand on Friday in Dublin has not only ended their 19-match winning streak at Lansdowne Road but also stripped them of the coveted No.1 position in the world rugby rankings.

This defeat marks the All Blacks’ second consecutive year-end victory over Ireland, mirroring their World Cup quarterfinal success in Paris last year.

The closely contested match saw both sides score one try each, but it was New Zealand flyhalf Damian McKenzie’s precision with six penalties that ultimately defined the outcome.

McKenzie’s accuracy from the tee kept Ireland under constant pressure, widening the gap in an otherwise tight contest.

Ireland’s loss opens the door for South Africa to regain the No.1 world ranking if they can manage a win or draw against Scotland on Sunday.

Should the Springboks falter, however, New Zealand will claim the top position, further shaking up the global rugby landscape.

“Our discipline was definitely a big factor,” said Calean Doris.

“The first half, we gave them territory, points. We felt it might swing in the second half, it was definitely a factor.”

Ireland now turns its attention to hosting Argentina next Friday, looking to regroup after a challenging match. Meanwhile, the All Blacks will face another European powerhouse, France, in what promises to be another thrilling encounter.
