Ireland head coach Andy Farrell has called up Leinster out-half Ross Byrne to the squad ahead of the autumn international clash against Australia.

The 27-year-old's inclusion comes after Joey Carbery is ruled out of the encounter after taking a blow to the head in a tackle that resulted in a red card for Albert Tuisue.

Skipper Johnny Sexton is also in doubt for the weekend's encounter after suffering a dead leg during Ireland's game against South Africa fortnight ago. He also missed last weekend's clash against Fiji.

Byrne hasn’t played for Ireland since March 2021 but now could make a return to his national team if Sexton fails to recover from his injury with Jack Crowley set to provide impact from the bench.

He made his debut against Italy in 2018 and has gone on to represent Ireland in 13 Tests.

Ireland are unbeaten in the ongoing autumn international fixture with a 19-16 win over the Springboks followed by a 35-17 victory over Fiji.
