French loose forward Axelle Berthoumieu has been suspended for 12 matches after being found guilty of biting during France’s Women’s Rugby World Cup quarter-final victory over Ireland in Exeter on 14 September.

The incident involved Ireland’s Aoife Wafer and was reviewed by an Independent Foul Play Review Committee (FPRC).

France captain Manaé Feleu was also cited for a dangerous tackle in the same match. She received a three-match suspension, which may be reduced to two if she completes the Coaching Intervention Programme.

The FPRC said: “In reviewing the matter live, the TMO (television match official) was unable to determine clear and obvious foul play and did not have the benefit of additional evidential submissions to corroborate.”

The panel noted that Berthoumieu “was remorseful” and “acknowledged foul play.” It reached its decision with the aid of written evidence and broadcast angles.

Both Berthoumieu and Feleu have chosen to appeal the proposed sanctions. Their cases will be heard by a Disciplinary Committee. Berthoumieu accepted that her action warranted a red card but is contesting the length of the ban.

The bans mean both players will miss the remainder of the 2025 Women’s Rugby World Cup, including France’s upcoming semi-final against England.
