Newcastle Red Bulls have confirmed the signing of New Zealand back Fehi Fineanganofo, with the powerful outside back set to arrive on Tyneside ahead of next season on a two-year deal.

The 23-year-old has enjoyed a rapid rise in New Zealand rugby, combining pace and physicality to make a strong impression at both Super Rugby and provincial level.

Fineanganofo featured prominently for the Hurricanes during the most recent Super Rugby campaign, scoring six tries in 12 appearances and establishing himself as one of the competition’s standout finishers.

Away from the 15-a-side game, Fineanganofo has also been a regular presence on the international sevens circuit. He represented New Zealand Sevens on the global series and was part of the wider Olympic programme in the build-up to Paris, gaining valuable experience at the highest level of the shortened format.

At domestic level, he has been a consistent performer for Bay of Plenty in New Zealand’s National Provincial Championship, scoring 16 tries across 24 appearances.

Fineanganofo said his immediate focus remains on finishing the current season strongly in New Zealand, but added that he is looking forward to starting a new chapter in the Premiership and contributing to Newcastle’s ambitions next season.

“I’m really excited for this new challenge and opportunity at Newcastle Red Bulls, but my main focus right now is Super Rugby and NPC here in New Zealand.

“I’m super grateful to New Zealand Rugby, the All Black 7s, Bay of Plenty and Hurricanes for the chance to achieve my dream of becoming a professional player. I'm especially grateful for the support I’ve had over the years, getting me through injuries and back on the field.

“I want to end off this year the right way, and to chase trophies in both Super Rugby and NPC. After that I can’t wait to start a new chapter with Newcastle Red Bulls, and the brand of rugby they want to bring to the Gallagher PREM.”
