Exeter Chiefs 28-24 Ealing Trailfinders, Sandy Park

Exeter Chiefs sealed their place in the Premiership Rugby Cup final with a hard-fought 28-24 victory over Ealing Trailfinders at Sandy Park.

The match saw both sides trade leads in a thrilling contest, but Exeter's resilience in the closing stages proved decisive as they secured their spot in the final against Bath.

The game began with both teams struggling to find their rhythm in a scrappy opening quarter. Ealing was the first to get on the scoreboard when a penalty was awarded following an infringement for a no-arms tackle.

The visitors then extended their advantage under controversial circumstances, as a pass that appeared forward led to a break, allowing them to cross for the opening try of the match.

Exeter responded with determination, finding space to strike back after a collapsed maul in Ealing’s 22. A quick pass to the short side saw Josh Hodge dart through for his team’s first try.

The Chiefs continued to build momentum and soon took the lead through a penalty try, awarded when their driving maul was illegally halted inches from the line. The infringement resulted in a yellow card for Ealing, reducing them to 14 men as Exeter entered the break with a 14-10 lead.

The second half saw an immediate response from Ealing. Sustained attacking phases allowed them to find a gap, with a quick offload leading to a well-worked try under the posts. A successful conversion restored their lead.

Moments later, another break through the Exeter defense resulted in a third try for the visitors, stretching their advantage to ten points.

Despite falling behind, Exeter refused to concede defeat. They struck back through Ethan Roots, who spotted a gap in the Ealing defense and powered over from close range. This crucial try swung the momentum back in favor of the home side.

With the game finely balanced, Exeter capitalized on an Ealing mistake to take control. A handling error in a counter-ruck gifted possession to the Chiefs, and Tommy Wyatt wasted no time in exploiting the opportunity, slicing through the defense to score the decisive try. The successful conversion put Exeter in command at 28-24.

Ealing desperately searched for a late comeback, but handling errors and Exeter’s defensive discipline ensured the home side maintained their lead until the final whistle.
