England have been dealt a significant setback ahead of their weekend Test against Argentina, with experienced centre Henry Slade ruled out due to a hip injury.
The versatile back suffered the setback in training and has not recovered sufficiently to be in contention for Saturday’s clash in La Plata.
Slade, one of the most consistent performers in England’s midfield, was expected to play a pivotal role against a physical Argentinian side.
Head coach Steve Borthwick confirmed the news, stating, “Unfortunately, Henry’s hip injury hasn’t responded to treatment as we hoped, so he’ll miss this Test.”
Borthwick now faces a decision on who to partner in midfield, with Ollie Lawrence the most likely candidate to step into the starting role. The coach hinted at flexibility in the squad:
“We have to be adaptable and trust the depth of this squad,” he said.
England may also consider reshuffling the back three to bring in a utility option, with players like Joe Cokanasiga or Tommy Freeman capable of shifting into various roles depending on the tactical approach.
Slade’s absence is more than a selection issue—it alters the tactical complexion of England’s game plan. Without his left boot and his ability to read attacking lines, England will need to lean more heavily on their forwards for go-forward ball and simplify backline combinations.
Borthwick admitted, “We want to build from what we’ve shown so far, even if we have to do so minus a key man.”
The second Test between England and Argentina have been scheduled to play on 12th July.
