England Sevens skipper Tom Mitchell has announced his retirement from international rugby with immediate effect.

A stalwart in the sevens format, Mitchell made his debut in 2012 and straightaway made an impact becoming the leading points scorer in the 2013/14 season after amassing 358 points.

He was one of four nominees for the 2014 World Rugby Sevens Player of the Year and led Great Britain to an Olympic silver medal at Rio Olympics in 2016 while also captaining them in the rescheduled Tokyo Olympics last year.

Mitchell also helped England win the bronze medal during the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia.

"As England Sevens comes to an end so does my time playing sevens rugby at the top," said Mitchell.

"Memories and thank yous to come in time but for now, I've loved it and I'm thankful."

The 2023 World Rugby Sevens Series will see England, Scotland and Wales combining to play for Great Britain.
