Eddie Jones will continue as head coach of Japan through the 2027 Rugby World Cup after receiving full backing from the Japan Rugby Football Union following an end-of-year performance review.
The decision comes after what officials described as a season of clear improvement.
JRFU chairman Kensuke Iwabuchi said the executive board held detailed discussions before unanimously agreeing to retain Jones and his current coaching team. He said the union would support them fully as they prepare for the World Cup in Australia.
“We confirmed that we will continue to support the current structure,” said Iwabuchi.
“We will support them so that they can move towards the World Cup in a good way.”
Japan’s 2025 season finished with five wins and six defeats. The team drew their home Test series against Wales and later faced a challenging European tour, suffering heavy losses to South Africa and Ireland but pushing Wales close and beating Georgia with a late penalty.
This followed a difficult 2024 where Japan endured heavy defeats to several top-tier nations. Officials believe the side has taken meaningful steps forward under Jones.
Japan have been placed in a pool with France, Samoa and the United States for the 2027 World Cup.
