British and Irish Lions lock Courtney Lawes is confident of a strong performance in the second Test against New Zealand in Wellington on Saturday, if he gets an opportunity.

Lawes along with Iain Henderson have boosted their chances of featuring in the second Test against Steve Hansen's men following their impressive performances in the recently concluded tour game against Hurricanes on Tuesday.

Wary of the challenge ahead, Lawes insisted that he will be up for the contest, in case he gets a chance to feature in the line-up.

"With Eddie Jones with England we have a pretty hard regime and we've played some pretty tough tests, so I'm ready," said Lawes.

"It'll be a quick game but that's what we want. We want to be out there against the best."

Lawes was replaced in the 53rd minute during the game against Hurricanes, giving an indication that Warren Gatland wants to keep the Northampton Saints star fresh for the second Test.

With Maro Itoje also set to be named in the starting XV and Henderson likely to be among the replacements, questions have been raised on the positions of George Kruis and Alun Wyn Jones, who made it to the starting line-up in the first game at Eden Park.

Asked if his early substitution on Tuesday represents a positive sign about Test-match selection, Lawes replied: "I've no idea, we'll just see what happens.

"I went out and did everything I could. It's not up to me anymore.

"I played fairly well, and I'd be looking forward to it if I get a run-out at the weekend.

"I never like getting subbed off. I wanted to stay on, the game was tightening up; it was a tough game. Kruis came on and did a good job.

"I am feeling confident if I do get called up.

"I'll lay it on the line like I always do."

Gatland had earlier admitted that leaving out Lawes was a tough call and the 28-year-old is pleased to learn that he is still in contention for a Lions spot.

"Yeah, of course I'm chuffed to hear that.

"You always want to be pushing for spots. Iain Henderson had an awesome game and I was able to have a good game too.

"You always want to make coach's life harder than it should be.

"I'll do all I can over next couple of days to make sure I'm in the best nick for the weekend."
