England fly-half Charlie Atkinson has signed a new contract with Gloucester Rugby, extending his stay at Kingsholm until at least 2029 following a 2025/26 campaign in which he won the club’s Coaches’, Players’ and Supporters’ Player of the Season awards.

Charlie Atkinson extends Gloucester Rugby stay

Atkinson joined Gloucester from Leicester Tigers in December 2023, having previously begun his professional career with Wasps. A product of Oxford RFC, the 24-year-old has since become an established member of the Cherry & Whites squad.

Head coach George Skivington said Atkinson had worked hard for his opportunities since arriving at Kingsholm and described securing his long-term future as a significant boost for the club.

“We’re delighted to extend Charlie’s contract here at Kingsholm," said Skivington.

“He’s someone we identified early on as a player we wanted to bring into our environment, and since joining the Club, he’s had to work incredibly hard for his opportunities. Over the past year, we’ve really seen the rewards of that dedication on the pitch.

“It’s a real coup for us to secure Charlie’s future. There was plenty of interest in him, but we’re confident in the programme we’ve built here and the vision for what we can achieve. Clearly, Charlie believes he can play a big part in that as well.”

Atkinson has made six appearances for England A and earned his only senior England cap against the USA in Washington in July 2025.

Atkinson commits future to Kingsholm

Atkinson said the decision to extend his contract was straightforward after considering his options, adding that Gloucester now feels like home despite not being from the area.

“It was a pretty easy decision for me to re-sign when I looked at all my options. I’m not from Gloucester, but I absolutely love the lads and the supporters, who have all welcomed me with open arms, so this really does feel like home now.

“Most importantly, I’m really enjoying my rugby at the moment.

"I feel like I have a big role to play within this team and, with the exciting changes to the coaching and playing group over the summer, I believe we’re only going to keep improving, both collectively and individually.”
