Carol Isherwood OBE has been appointed as the first-ever chair of the Lions Women’s Committee, a milestone moment for the British & Irish Lions as they prepare for the inaugural Lions Women’s Tour to New Zealand in 2027.
Isherwood, a trailblazer in women’s rugby, has played a pivotal role in the development of the sport, both on and off the field. She will also join the board of the British & Irish Lions, bringing her vast experience to shape the future of the women’s game.
Isherwood was instrumental in the founding of the first Women’s Rugby Football Union, later serving as its first Chair. Her contribution to the sport was recognized with an OBE in 2003, and in 2009 she became the first woman appointed to World Rugby’s Rugby Committee.
In 2014, she was inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame, cementing her status as one of the sport’s most influential figures.
Reflecting on her new role, Isherwood expressed her excitement and commitment to making the 2027 Lions Women’s Tour a success.

"Having worked in the women’s game for more than four decades, alongside experiencing the first-ever Great Britain and England women’s rugby teams, the Lions Women’s team and Tour provide another opportunity to showcase the women’s game."
Isherwood’s first major responsibility will be overseeing the historic Lions Women’s Tour to New Zealand in 2027, a groundbreaking event for women’s rugby.
Ieuan Evans MBE, Chair of the British & Irish Lions, emphasized the significance of her appointment, acknowledging the importance of supporting the women’s game.

Isherwood has been a pioneering figure in women’s rugby for decades. As a former captain of both Great Britain and England, she earned 15 international caps before transitioning into coaching.
She led England at the 1994 Women’s Rugby World Cup, served as Head Coach for England U19s, and worked with Henley, Richmond, and divisional teams. Her expertise extended to roles as Performance Director and Director of Rugby, solidifying her reputation as a leading strategist and advocate for the game.

Isherwood has also held positions with the Rugby Football Union Women, the Rugby Football Union, the Scottish Rugby Union, World Rugby, and the Football Association (FA).
