Scotland scrum-half Ben White has described feeling “shaky with excitement” after receiving a surprise call-up to the British & Irish Lions squad currently touring Australia.
The 27-year-old, who was in New Zealand with the Scotland training group, has been drafted in to replace the injured Tomos Williams.
White recalled the moment head coach Andy Farrell contacted him with the news.
“He called me this morning and I haven’t stopped shaking since,” White said.
“It’s an incredible honour. It’s something you dream of, but not something you think you’ll actually do.”
Shortly after the call, he rang his parents, who he said were overwhelmed with pride and joy.
White admitted that watching the original Lions squad announcement was tough, but he remained focused on his club form and international duties.
“Obviously watching the squad being announced was hard, but it was something I took on the chin and just kept pushing. I’m very grateful this chance has come.”
The Scotland No. 9 had been preparing to face the Maori All Blacks with his national teammates in Whangarei when the Lions opportunity came knocking.
White will not feature in the upcoming midweek fixture against Queensland Reds but is expected to compete for a matchday spot in the games to follow.
The call-up brings White into a Lions environment featuring fellow Scots Finn Russell, Huw Jones, and Duhan van der Merwe, many of whom he’s played alongside at both club and international level.
“To join a squad like this, with players I know and respect, is just special. I’m going to give it everything,” White added.
