Edinburgh fly-half Ben Healy has joined Newcastle Red Bulls on a short-term loan deal until the end of the current season, giving the PREM club added cover and competition in the closing weeks of the campaign.

Healy, 26, can play at fly-half or full-back and arrives with 10 Scotland caps. Before his move to Edinburgh, he made more than 50 appearances for Munster and spent the last three seasons in the Scottish capital.

Newcastle see the loan as an important late-season addition, particularly with injuries affecting their options at half-back. The club said Healy will provide immediate cover and strengthen competition in key playmaking roles.

“Ben is a quality addition who will greatly boost our playing pool between now and the end of the season," said Sporting general manager Neil McIlroy.

“As well as providing injury cover for the likes of Ethan Grayson he also gives us genuine competition at fly-half, and he will be available for selection straightaway.

“In addition to all the planning we are doing for the longer term we are also fully committed to finishing the current campaign strongly, and having Ben on board will help us achieve that goal.”

Scotland International Adds Experience

Standing 6ft 3in, the Tipperary-born back qualifies for Scotland through ancestry and made his international debut in 2023. His arrival gives Newcastle an experienced operator with both URC and Test-level exposure at a time when the club is trying to finish the season strongly.

Newcastle Gain Short-Term Fly-Half Cover

Healy said the move offers him the chance to experience a new competition and work in a different rugby environment.

“I’m excited to be playing in a new competition, exposing myself to a different style of rugby.

“Gallagher PREM Rugby is a great production and it will be fantastic to be involved with that, having watched it so much over the years".
