Eddie Jones believes that Australia must reach a low point before they can rise again as a dominant force in rugby.

Despite this perspective, he maintains a strong belief in his team's ability to excel in the Rugby World Cup.

The former England coach was appointed the head coach of the Wallabies earlier in the year replacing Dave Rennie but have endured a tough time after losing games against Argentina and South Africa in the opening two rounds of the Rugby Championship.

The results also saw the Wallabies drop down to the eighth position in the World Rugby Rankings but Jones is confident of a turnaround.

"I think in reality we need to hit rock bottom and then bounce up,” Jones told Sky Sports News.

“I was hoping that we could do an immediate rescue job. That's not going to happen. We almost need to scrape at the bottom and start again to a large degree.

"There's been a fairly big drop off in Australian rugby so we've got to try to find a way to lift it up.

"There's been a long period now where they've been unsuccessful and that almost becomes the norm so we're having to change the mindset, we're having to change training habits, we're having to change the way the players think about the game."
