Newcastle Falcons have announced that Argentina wing Mateo Carreras has penned a new two-year contract with the Gallagher Premiership club.

He started playing for Argentina based club Los Tarcos in 2018 before going on to make his Super Rugby debut with Jaguares in 2019.

The 22-year-old joined the Falcons in 2021 and has gone on to make 13 appearances for them.

“I am really happy to extend my contract here in Newcastle,” he told the club's official website.

“I love the club, I believe we have a good future here and I’m excited for the next two seasons. We have a very good group of players and staff at the Falcons, I enjoy being here and it’s fantastic to have signed for another two years.”

Carreras also had represented Argentina in the Under 20 and Sevens format previously apart from five Test appearances for the Pumas.

Newcastle Falcons director of rugby Dean Richards is delighted with Carreras extending his stay at the club.

“Mateo is a real livewire in attack who continues to work really hard at his game.

“His pace and footwork are obvious but he also possesses incredible strength for a relatively small guy, which makes him a real handful for any defence.

“As well as that he’s just got a really positive attitude and a desire to keep improving, so it’s been great to see him stepping up and earning his first few caps for Argentina.

“He will be a key weapon for us as we continue to build over the coming years, and it’s more great news for the club that a player of Mateo’s ability sees his future here.”

Newcastle Falcons are positioned 11th in the Gallagher Premiership table with six wins from 20 games. They were edged out by a 17-27 margin by Glasgow Warriors in the knock-out game of European Challenge Cup.
