All Blacks star Ardie Savea has announced that he will skip the 2026 Super Rugby Pacific season to take up a one-year sabbatical in Japan, joining the Kobe Steelers.
The move, although temporary, marks a new chapter in Savea’s career following a standout season that saw him named Super Rugby Pacific Player of the Year.
Savea will remain part of the All Blacks setup, playing through the November internationals in 2025 before heading to Japan.
As per New Zealand Rugby’s sabbatical policy, he is expected to return in time for the 2026 mid-year test series, keeping his national eligibility intact through 2027.
“It's hard to leave, even though it's only for one season, but I'll be supporting the team from afar and will stay involved behind the scenes,” Savea said.
“This year at Moana Pasifika was the happiest I've been in my career.”
The 31-year-old’s leadership played a pivotal role in Moana Pasifika’s most successful season yet, both in performance and team spirit. His absence next year will certainly be felt, but the club remains supportive and optimistic.
Moana Pasifika head coach Tana Umaga backed Savea’s decision, reflecting a progressive attitude towards player welfare and career longevity.
“Ardie obviously goes with our blessing…
"We will continue to build the momentum of our movement in 2026 and work hard to grow our game so that we will be even better when he gets back to us in 2027.”
New Zealand Rugby sees sabbaticals as part of a long-term strategy to retain elite players while allowing them short-term access to overseas markets. These deals are designed to keep players fresh, motivated, and financially supported, without jeopardising national team planning.
“He was pivotal to our season and our culture,” Umaga added. “We'll miss him in 2026, but it opens opportunities for growth within the squad.”
