New Zealand international James Parsons has announced his retirement from professional rugby on medical grounds.

The 34-year-old's decision follows after he failed to recover from concussion symptoms.

Parsons made his international debut for New Zealand in 2014 against Scotland and has featured in just two Tests with his last appearance coming in August 2016.

His professional rugby career started in 2007 for provincial side North Harbour and five years later, he made his Super Rugby debut for Auckland Blues. He is also the fourth capped player for Blues in the history of the club with 115 games.

“For me it’s not about sadness it’s about celebration,” he said in a statement on Thursday.

“I’ve been very fortunate to represent my two home teams The Blues and North Harbour Rugby over 100 times each which is a dream come true, and to play two Tests for the All Blacks is something I’ll never forget.”
