Anton Segner injury concern grows for All Blacks

All Blacks head coach Dave Rennie says there is still no clear timeframe for Anton Segner’s return after the loose forward underwent further assessment on his swollen ankle.

Segner was originally named on the bench for New Zealand’s 33-16 victory over the Springboks at Ellis Park but was withdrawn shortly before kick-off and replaced by Simon Parker.

The All Blacks later confirmed the 25-year-old’s condition had been assessed as acute inflammatory arthritis.

Rennie confirmed Segner will not face the Lions at Ellis Park on Tuesday and said the forward had undergone another hospital check-up. His availability for the remainder of the South Africa tour remains uncertain.

“There’s nothing that I can really share at the moment,” Rennie said.

“He won’t be available this week; he went into hospital for another check-up".

De Groot and Lord ruled out

New Zealand will also be without Ethan de Groot and Josh Lord for the second Test against the Springboks in Cape Town.

Both players suffered concussion injuries during the opening Test and are subject to a 12-day stand-down period under concussion protocols.

Prop Ofa Tu’ungafasi and lock Jamie Hannah have been called into the touring squad as cover for De Groot and Lord.
