All Blacks star Richie Mo’unga will return to New Zealand Rugby on an 18-month contract starting in July 2026, running through to the end of 2027.

The agreement will see the playmaker rejoin Canterbury Rugby for the 2026 and 2027 Bunnings Warehouse NPC seasons, line up for the Crusaders in the 2027 DHL Super Rugby Pacific campaign, and be available for All Blacks selection from October 2026.

Mo’unga, 30, has an illustrious record in New Zealand rugby, having played 51 games for Canterbury and winning four national provincial titles with the side.

A Crusaders centurion with 109 appearances, he was a key figure in their unprecedented run of seven consecutive Super Rugby titles from 2017 to 2023. Internationally, he has represented the All Blacks in 56 Tests between 2017 and 2023, featuring in two Rugby World Cups.

NZR Chief Executive Mark Robinson said Mo’unga’s return was a significant boost for the national game.

“We’re really pleased to have Richie re-committing to New Zealand Rugby, the Crusaders and Canterbury Rugby.

"He’s a proven talent with a strong track record on the biggest stages. His experience and leadership will be a tremendous asset,” Robinson said.

Crusaders Chief Executive Colin Mansbridge described Mo’unga’s comeback as a special moment for the club and its fans.

“The care Richie has for this team is second to none. He has a gift for bringing out the best in those around him and we can’t wait to have him back in 2027,” he said.

Canterbury Rugby CEO Tony Smail added that the region would warmly welcome Mo’unga home.

“Richie has deep roots in Christchurch and Canterbury. He’s not only a remarkable player but a role model who carries himself with humility and professionalism,” Smail said.

Mo’unga is currently playing club rugby in Japan and will complete his overseas commitments before returning to New Zealand in mid-2026.
