In a major leadership shake-up ahead of the 2025 Rugby World Cup, Zoe Aldcroft has been named captain of England Women, replacing Marlie Packer.

Aldcroft, a standout performer for the Red Roses, takes on the role in what promises to be a pivotal year for the team.

The Gloucester-Hartpury lock, who was named World Rugby Women’s Player of the Year in 2021, has consistently delivered impressive performances on the international stage.

Aldcroft’s leadership qualities and vast experience have made her the natural choice to lead England as they gear up for the global tournament.

Marlie Packer, a seasoned campaigner and a stalwart of England rugby, has been a key figure in the squad’s successes over recent years. While Packer steps down as captain, her contributions to the team remain invaluable, and she is expected to play a crucial role both on and off the pitch during the World Cup campaign.

Head coach John Mitchell praised both players for their dedication and professionalism.

“Zoe has consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities, and her deep understanding of the game makes her the ideal choice as captain.

"Marlie’s impact on the team remains undiminished, and her experience will continue to be vital for us,” Middleton said.

The appointment of Aldcroft comes at a critical juncture, with England aiming to reclaim the World Cup title on home soil which kicks-off against the USA in August.
