World Rugby has announced the implementation of four significant Global Law Trials, which will officially take effect in the USA on 1st January 2025.

These changes, aimed at enhancing the flow and fairness of the game, apply to rugby at all levels and across all formats.

The newly approved laws focus on refining gameplay at scrums, rucks, and mauls, ensuring cleaner and more efficient play.

  1. Rucks and Mauls: Players who were part of a ruck or maul will no longer be permitted to interfere with an opponent attempting to retrieve the ball from these formations.
  2. Scrums: The scrum-half of the team not in possession is restricted from crossing the center of the tunnel during the scrum phase, promoting balance and fairness in play.

Time Regulations:

To improve the game’s tempo, changes have also been introduced to timing rules:

Conversion Kicks: The time limit for taking a conversion kick has been reduced from 90 seconds to 60 seconds. For Sevens, the existing 30-second limit remains unchanged.
Lineouts: Lineouts must now be formed within 30 seconds, mirroring the current time restriction for scrums.
In addition, play will continue in instances where a throw at an uncontested lineout is not straight.

Impact on the Game

These changes aim to streamline the game, reduce delays, and maintain fair competition. While they represent important updates, they align closely with the way referees have traditionally been advised to officiate these scenarios. Teams are encouraged to ensure all players are fully aware of the adjustments to avoid unnecessary penalties.
