The National Rugby League (NRL) has delivered a major setback to the proposed breakaway rugby competition R360, warning that any player who signs with the league faces a 10-year ban.

R360, co-founded by former England centre Mike Tindall, is targeting an October 2026 launch with the promise of lucrative contracts and a condensed season aimed at attracting stars from both rugby union and league.

Reports in Australia have linked NRL players Nathan Cleary, Reece Walsh and Roger Tuivasa-Sheck with potential moves.

But the Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) has taken a hard-line stance. It confirmed that any player or agent involved in unrecognised competitions would face long-term suspensions.

ARLC chairman Peter V’landys said the measures were necessary to protect the sport, accusing R360 of trying to “pirate the game” without investing in development pathways.

"The commission has a clear duty to act in the best interests of rugby league and its fans and we will take all necessary steps to protect the future of the game," said V'landys.

"Unfortunately, there will always be organisations that seek to pirate our game for potential financial gain.

"They don't invest in pathways or the development of players, they simply exploit the hard work of others, putting players at risk of financial loss while profiting themselves."

The warning comes after eight major rugby unions last week ruled out international eligibility for any player joining R360.

Despite the opposition, R360’s backers remain determined to push ahead, with organisers insisting the global franchise-style tournament will begin in 2026 once World Rugby sanctioning is sought.

“Recent announcements, sadly, have been anticipated,” Mark Spoors, co-CEO of R360, said.

“History shows that when athletes are offered free choice and given fresh opportunities for them and their families then threats to those sportsmen and women follow.

"R360 is about empowering players, giving them, rugby lovers and the next generation of fans opportunities and new platforms to enjoy the sport we love."
