Wath's Newest Debutants

Wath upon Dearne RUFC’s latest team had their debut game on Sunday, Wath Under 12s travelled to fellow debutants Thorne Under 12s where a superb game took place.

Wath were able to field a squad of 19 and with a few players away for half term numbers are looking good so far for the Moor Road youngsters.

Fly Half Josh got proceedings under way and it was strong running from him and front row Jack that sparked the first real attack. Quick ball from scrum half Finlay was key before the ball found skipper and centre Jonah with some space. The centre chose the direct route and barrelled over to score.

The home side hit back, a period of sustained pressure eventually resulted in a well worked team try. Wath centre Ethan was the next to make an impact, powerful running gave Wath good field position before the pack set up a maul. The forwards marched towards the line before fly half Josh P received the ball and side stepped down the blindside and over the whitewash.

From the kick off in the second half Thorne were immediately on the score sheet a rangey run from their powerful winger saw him away to score. The home side next up would take the lead, a strong scrum saw the scrum half go blind and over the line.

The next spell was a dominant display by Wath, strong forward running gave good field position before No 8 Adam surged over the line.

Centre Ethan bagged the next two scores, some fantastic strong running by the centre and great quick ball from the pack stretched Waths lead to 35-17.

The closing stages of the game saw the hosts battle back two well worked tries but a monumental defensive effort in the closing minutes saw Wath hold on for the 35-31 win.

A fantastic day at Coulman Road, the best part of the afternoon seeing two sets of lads cheering each other off the field with beaming smiles. Big thankyou to Thorne for being great hosts and we look forward to the return fixture. Great to see two small community clubs increasing their playing pool and encouraging youngsters to enjoy our superb sport.
