British and Irish Lions head coach Warren Gatland has named Scotland's Stuart Hogg captain for the upcoming tour game against Emirates Lions to be played in Johannesburg on Saturday.

Hogg missed the warm-up game against Japan due to his commitments with Exeter Chiefs when they faced Harlequins in the Premiership final but now will be leading the side in the tour opener.

Hogg will start at fullback and will have Wales duo Rees-Zammit and Josh Adams at wings. Chris Harris will form midfield partnership with England skipper Owen Farrell with Finn Russell handed the kicking responsibility forming halfback partnership with Ali Price.

Maro Itoje and Jonny Hill have been the preferred locks with Courtney Lawes, Hamish Watson and Taulupe Faletau at back-row.

“It’s good to have arrived in Johannesburg and get the tour under way,” Gatland said.

“We had a pleasing win last week up in Edinburgh, but there’s still plenty we need to get right on Saturday.

“I’ve been encouraged by the way the boys have trained this week. I feel it’s gone up a level from where we were in Jersey and we’re starting to see a better understanding of some of our tactics.

“There’s some new player combinations for us to have a look at this Saturday – which is good information for us as the Test series approaches.

“My congratulations to all those playing their first game as a Lion, and also to Hoggy too – who I am sure will lead the side by example.”

The bench will see four England players - Luke Cowan-Dickie, Mako Vunipola, Sam Simmonds and Elliot Daly along with Iain Henderson, Gareth Davies, Bundee Aki and Zander Fagerson, who missed the game against Japan due to a back spasm.
