The Stormers confirmed that one of their Champions Cup fixtures for the upcoming season will be hosted in Gqeberha at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.
The match is scheduled for December 13, when the Cape-based team will face French giants Stade Rochelais in Round Two of the tournament.
The move comes after the Cape Town Stadium was booked to host the World Supercross Championship on the same weekend, forcing the Stormers to find an alternative home ground.
It will be the second time Champions Cup rugby is played in Gqeberha, following last season’s successful match against RC Toulon at the same venue.
Director of Rugby John Dobson welcomed the decision, saying the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium felt like a “home away from home” for the Stormers.
“Last year, we were overwhelmed by the support from the people of Gqeberha, and the stadium provided excellent facilities. Facing one of the top club teams in the world here will be another special occasion,” Dobson said.
CEO Johan le Roux echoed the sentiment, describing last season’s game as a “fantastic experience” and promising an even bigger spectacle this time.
“With Cape Town unavailable, Gqeberha once again gives us a passionate rugby crowd and a top-class venue,” he added.
Boost for Local Economy
Mandela Bay Development Agency CEO Anele Qaba highlighted the broader impact of hosting the game. He said the event would provide a significant boost to tourism and hospitality in the city, while also helping the stadium meet its annual revenue targets.
“We saw last year how much it meant to the community, and we are confident this year’s match will be even better,” Qaba said.
