Springboks forward Elrigh Louw has been ruled out for the entire 2025 season after suffering a serious knee injury during a clash between the Lions and Bulls on January 25 at Emirates Airlines Park.

The injury, which occurred just moments into the second half, is expected to keep him sidelined for approximately 11 months following surgery.

The match was a closely contested encounter, with the scoreline reading 11-10 at halftime. However, the game took a grim turn just a minute into the second half when Louw went down in visible distress.

The 108 kg forward later discovered that he had torn the ligaments in his left knee, a setback that will likely keep him off the field for the remainder of the year.

Louw, who had been in impressive form heading into 2025, was expected to add to his 15 Springbok caps before the unfortunate injury. Providing an update on his rehabilitation, he shared, “I’m waiting for the specialist to give me the go-ahead so I can start my rehab.”

He further explained the expected recovery timeline, stating, “The specialist said it’s about a year-long recovery but it’s an outcome-based plan, so if I’m feeling better in 11 months or even nine months, then I’ll be ready to go.”

While eager to make a return as soon as possible, Louw has set a realistic goal for himself. “I would like to be back as soon as possible but realistically, I’m targeting January or February next year.

"I think that’s a good goal for me, to be able to play a few games before the Springbok Tests begin in 2026,” he added.

The forward also revealed details about his post-surgery recovery process, explaining, “I had to wait three weeks for the swelling to go down before I could get the operation.

"After the surgery, for the next week I was stuck in bed. Luckily I’m no longer bed-bound and I can stand up. I can’t put any pressure on my leg, and I can’t bend it.”

Despite the challenges, Louw remains optimistic about his progress, sharing, “A milestone for me is being without pain. I can move freely on crutches now and drive around, so I’m not stuck at home.”
