South Africa release Du Toit, De Allende before Wallabies Test

Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus has confirmed Pieter-Steph du Toit and Damian de Allende have been released from the squad and will miss South Africa’s one-off Test against Australia in Perth on September 27.

The experienced pair have returned home to spend time with their families following the demanding four-Test Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry series against New Zealand.

Both started all four matches as South Africa recovered from losing the opening Test to secure a 3-1 series victory.

Erasmus said the Springboks have sufficient cover within their travelling squad for the Wallabies encounter.

“They’ll be really fresh and they’ve won four out of five of their recent matches, while we come off a tough series against New Zealand,” Erasmus said.

“But RGR and this match have nothing to do with each other. This is a completely different challenge.”

South Africa are currently based in Terrigal, north of Sydney, and are scheduled to travel to Perth on Thursday ahead of the Test at Optus Stadium.

Erasmus expects different challenge from Australia

The Wallabies and Springboks will meet for the first time in 2026, with Erasmus warning that Australia will present a different challenge to the All Blacks.

“But RGR and this match have nothing to do with each other. This is a completely different challenge.”
