Scottish Rugby has dismissed chief executive Alex Williamson with immediate effect after an independent investigation into his behaviour concluded that his conduct fell significantly below the organisation’s standards.
Alex Williamson Dismissed By Scottish Rugby
Williamson had been on extended leave since May while the investigation was carried out. Scottish Rugby has now confirmed that the board has ended his tenure following the conclusion of that process.
John McGuigan, chair of Scottish Rugby Limited, said the decision followed matters that were brought to the board’s attention earlier this year. He said the findings of the independent investigation left the board with no option but to dismiss Williamson from his role.
“The board of Scottish Rugby has today dismissed Alex Williamson from his position as chief executive with immediate effect.
“His dismissal follows the conclusion of an independent investigation into matters that were brought to the board’s attention earlier this year.
“In light of the investigation findings, the board of Scottish Rugby concluded that the CEO’s conduct had fallen significantly below the standards we set as an organisation.”
Independent Investigation Concludes
The investigation was led by a senior lawyer and focused on concerns over Williamson’s conduct. Scottish Rugby has not publicly detailed the full nature of the findings, though reports have linked the matter to an alleged inappropriate relationship.
The governing body said Williamson’s behaviour had fallen well below the standards expected within the organisation. The conclusion made his position as chief executive untenable.
Short But Significant Tenure Ends
Williamson joined Scottish Rugby from Inspiring Learning and had previously held senior roles at Goodwood Estate and House of Fraser. He was appointed in September 2024 and officially took office in January 2025.
Although his time in charge lasted around 18 months, it included several major decisions. During his tenure, Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend received a contract extension through to the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
Williamson also oversaw new deals for Glasgow Warriors head coach Franco Smith and Edinburgh head coach Sean Everitt before his departure.
