All Blacks head coach Scott Robertson has warned his side to be on high alert for Argentina’s pace and creativity as they prepare for their opening Rugby Championship clash in Córdoba this weekend.
The match comes with the memory of last year’s upset in Wellington, where the Pumas capitalised on key moments to secure victory.
Robertson acknowledged Argentina’s strengths, noting their mix of European-based experience, passionate play, and finishing speed.
“They create a lot. They’ve got speed to finish, so they’re threatening. In Test rugby, among the top eight, anyone can win on the night. You’ve got to be at your best every game,” he said.
He expects a fiercely competitive tournament, highlighting Australia’s form following their series against the British & Irish Lions, South Africa’s established power, and Argentina’s unpredictability.
“It’s a hell of a competition, very tight and just what we need,” he added.
For Sunday’s Test, the All Blacks will be without No.8 Wallace Sititi and prop Tamaiti Williams. Ardie Savea, who has already played 17 matches this year, returns from a three-week break and is in peak condition, though Robertson stressed they will manage his minutes carefully.
Halfback injuries mean Cortez Ratima is likely to start. Robertson praised the 10-cap player for his quick delivery and growing maturity, saying his style suits the All Blacks’ fast-paced game plan.
The coach also emphasised the value of touring, describing it as a unique opportunity to bond without the distractions of home.
“You’re living with people who love the same sport as you, working towards a target at the end of the week, and enjoying the process along the way,” he said.
