New Zealand captain Scott Barrett has responded to recent comments by England’s Joe Marler, who suggested the All Blacks should “ditch” their traditional haka.

Speaking ahead of New Zealand’s match against England at Twickenham on Saturday, Barrett remarked that Marler’s remarks had “loaded the gun,” adding that the haka remains deeply meaningful for his team.

“He has probably loaded the gun, hasn’t he?” Barrett said on Friday, noting the All Blacks’ strong connection to the Maori war dance. “It is hugely important to us and has been to the All Blacks for a long time; we get a lot from it.”

Although Marler later apologized for his comments, England’s Jamie George acknowledged that the statement may have “prodded the bear.”

Barrett also echoed that sentiment, though he emphasized that his team does not require extra motivation to face England. With England eager to rebound after recent narrow losses to New Zealand—16-15 and 24-17 defeats in July’s Test series—the All Blacks captain acknowledged the intensity of the rivalry.

“We don’t need any extra motivation heading to Twickenham,” Barrett continued.

“England will be keen to shake off that ‘stone in their shoe’ with a good performance. They pose a significant threat up front with players like George Martin, Jamie George, and Maro Itoje.”

The All Blacks know that controlling the breakdown and the gainline will be essential, as a strong English pack could provide quick ball for Marcus Smith and the backs.

Barrett expects a tough “arm wrestle” at Twickenham, aware that his side must manage both physical and tactical battles if they are to come out on top.

"I feel like we've learnt a lot from the summer series and we're excited about whats ahead.

"We'll see in the next three Test matches (if we have our aura). We're playing the best of the northern hemisphere (they also take on France and Ireland this trip) so it's a great opportunity for this team."
